Men's Basketball Drops Nail Biter to Barclay College

On Monday night Ecclesia Men’s Basketball traveled to Haviland, KS to go up against Barclay College. This game would have a little extra meaning to it as both Ecclesia Head Coach Tanner Huck and Assistant Coach Matthew Jarrell graduated from Barclay.

In the first half the Royals came out flat and slow, and seemed to lack energy. Scoring 12 points in as many minutes, Ecclesia dug themselves an early hole. The first half ended with Ecclesia trailing 51-33 as De’Vontae Ross ended the half scoring the final 12 points on 4 consecutive made 3’s.

The Royals came out of the locker room possessed with a sense of urgency in the second half. The comeback would be fueled by strong defense which led to offense. The comeback continued late into the second half, and with 2 minutes remaining the Royals had cut Barclay’s lead to 87-85. With just :19 seconds left to play the Royals had the ball trailing 93-91. Vince Toftness (Owenton, KY/Asbury University) got a good look from beyond the arc, but the ball bounced off the rim and Ecclesia lost 93-91.

When asked about the game afterwards Coach Huck said, “It was a fun game being back in Hockett Auditorium, and was a tale of two halves. It is hard to overcome when you dig yourselves a whole. I am proud of the grit and determined play of my guys in the second half.”

Ecclesia was led by Freshman De’Vontae Ross (Bearden, AR) who dropped 29 points on his coaches former team. The Royals play again on Friday the 14th against Calvary University at 7p.m.
