Ecclesia Basketball Completes Sweep of Ozark Christian College

Tuesday was a big night for Ecclesia College Basketball! The Royals traveled up to Joplin, MO to take on Ozark Christian College. The Lady Royals played first with the Men’s team following, and they would both put on a show.

The Lady Royals got things started with a really slow first quarter. Trailing 11-6 after the first ten minutes Ecclesia then came alive on offense and locked up OCC on defense in the second. At the half the Lady Royals had taken the lead by one 20-19.

In the third the Royals continued their hot shooting racking up 26 points on the home team. Ozark Christian would try their best to get the lead back, but came up short as Ecclesia won their first game of the season by a score of 64-57.

The Lady Royals knocked down 8 three pointers during the contest, and 6 of them were drained by Senior Guard Haley Gresham (Crowley, TX/Southwestern Assemblies of God University). She would lead Ecclesia with 22 points, as three other Lady Royals reached double digits.

Following the excitement of the Women notching their first win, the Ecclesia Men’s Basketball team answered with an offensive explosion.

In the first twenty minutes everything seemed to be finding the bottom of the basket as the Royals poured in 62 first half points. Senior Davion Lockridge (El Paso, TX/Ranger Junior College) and Freshman Deondre Phillips (Fort Smith, AR/North Side High School) wore out the nylon early on, knocking down shot after shot to lead Ecclesia to 67% shooting from the field and 53% shooting from beyond the arc in the opening half.

Switching ends of the court didn’t seem to matter as Ecclesia continued to score at will after the halftime break. The transition game would be big for the Royals as they played fast and scored often. Sophomore Vince Toftness (Owenton, KY/Asbury University) was the guy to watch in the second half as he hit 3-4 from downtown. Ecclesia held Ozark Christian under 40 points in each half and would complete the rout to win 111-75.

The Royals had five players reach double digits in scoring. Ecclesia’s offense was led by Vince Toftness (Owenton, KY/Asbury University) with 28. Deondre Phillips (Fort Smith, AR/North Side High School) added 22, while Cash Krueger (Denton, TX/Lyon College) tallied 17, and Milacio Freeland (Rogers, AR/Lyon College) put up 13. Davion Lockridge (El Paso, TX/Ranger Junior College) scored 11, with 10 coming in the first half. The Royals would set a season high for assists with 35, led by Freshman Guard Keondre Jones (Tulsa, OK/Langston University) who dished out 9.

Both the Lady Royals and Royals are back in action on Saturday when they look to stay hot at Nebraska Christian College. The women tip off at 4:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 6:00 p.m. Go Royals!
