Day Four, and Championship of the Independent Tournament

*

The fourth and final day of the tournament saw the culmination of a long, hard fought week. The Championship game started at 11am between the #1 Ecclesia College Royals and #2 Kansas Christian College Falcons. The teams took very different paths to get to this point. Having received a bye and not losing a game the Royals made it to the Championship with only two games played in the tournament. The Falcons were not as fortunate. Suffering an upset in the first round, the Falcons had to claw all the way through the losers bracket. Kansas Christian played five games to get to the Championship game. Plus, with Ecclesia having not lost a game in a double elimination tournament, the Falcons would have to beat the Royals twice in order to claim the banner.

Recap:

The championship game was extremely good baseball. Both pitchers went the full nine innings before being relieved for the extra innings. Coleson Coffey pitched nine innings for the Royals giving up six hits but throwing seven strikeouts. Elijah Saldana relieved Coffey in the extra innings. Ecclesia put the first run on the board in the bottom of the 5th and KCC soon responded with a run in the top of the sixth. The field for both teams was very strong. The score would stay 1-1 until the top of the 11th inning when KCC would bat in two runners. EC was not able to respond and lost game one of the championship 3-1.

The rubber match and final game of the tournament saw a very similar start. Through the top of the 5th neither team had posted a run. Then on an uncharacteristic error by Ecclesia, Kansas Christian posted their first run. This started an offensive onslaught and the inning ended 9-0 in favor of KCC. The Falcons would tack on one more run in the bottom of the seventh to end the game ahead of schedule 10-0. Matthew Threatt pitched the complete for the Royals.
