Saturday night featured the Men’s Basketball team taking on Calvary University in Kansas City, MO. In their meeting earlier this season Ecclesia came away with a 64-62 win.
The first half of action would be extremely competitive as both teams were scoring quickly and often. It remained close for the full 20 minutes. The half ended with Freshman Deondre Phillips (Fort Smith, AR/North Side High School) intercepting a pass, taking it down the court, and dropping a layup through the net right before the buzzer. This put Ecclesia down 43-42 entering halftime.
In the second half Ecclesia struggled early as Calvary was able to extend the lead to 14 before Ecclesia called time-out with 13:09 remaining in the game. With the help of multiple scoring droughts, the Royals were able to start chipping away. Late in the game Ecclesia got hot on offense. With 6 minutes remaining Phillips hit a 3 pointer to cut the lead to 3. Ecclesia took the lead on a field goal by Senior Forward Cash Krueger with 4:26 left, and never relinquished the lead.
The game would wrap up with Ecclesia taking command from the free throw line to finish with a 98-88 come from behind win. Senior Cash Krueger (Denton, TX/Lyon College) led the team with 23 points and 9 rebounds. Freshman Deondre Phillips (Fort Smith, AR/North Side High School) would add 22, and Ashton Worgu (New Iberia, LA/Morthland College), Milacio Freeland (Rogers,AR/Lyon College), and Vince Toftness (Owenton, KY/Asbury University) would all reach double figures as well. Ecclesia heads to Rogers State Monday January 7 for a game at 2:00p.m.
