Women’s Basketball kicked off their 2019-2020 season this past weekend in Texas, as they played two games against Southwestern Adventist University. Ecclesia was very competitive and had a great opening weekend.
Game one tipped off on Saturday and it was the visiting Royals who took charge early on. The Ecclesia offense scored 29 first half points and played strong defense. They held the home team to just 7 first quarter points, and led 29-21 at the half.
The offense stalled in the second half for the Lady Royals, allowing Southwestern Adventist to make a comeback. The Lady Royals would drop their season opener 51-47 in a tight battle. Freshman forward Kaylee Coffman had an exceptional debut as she tallied a double-double, scoring 16 points and hauling in 15 rebounds.
Game 2 featured another battle. After a slow start in the first quarter both teams started trading baskets and kept the game close the rest of the way. Trailing 25-24 at the half, the Royals kept it close to the end.
In the final quarter the Ecclesia defense stepped up and limited the Southwestern Adventist offense to ten, allowing the Lady Royals to take and keep the lead. Ecclesia won 54-51 to earn their first win of the year. Saphire Thompson led the offense with 16 points. Freshman Kaylee Coffman added another double-double scoring 14 and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Sophomore Harmony Van Campen had a balanced day that led to a quiet double-double, nearing a triple-double as she had 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists. The Lady Royals play again on Tuesday 10/29/2019 against Williams Baptist University in Walnut Ridge, AR.
