This past weekend the Royals Men’s Basketball team opened up their 2019-2020 season with games on Friday and Saturday. During the trip the team was able to stop at the memorial for the Oklahoma City bombing and pray for the people affected by the tragic event that took place nearly 25 years ago.
Friday night featured action against NAIA opponent Mid America Christian University. MACU came out hot and stayed hot. The Royals played a good first 20 minutes of basketball as they tallied 40 points in the half. However, they struggled to stop the lights out shooting of their opponents. Ecclesia would go into the half trailing 57-40.
The second half featured more of the same, as Ecclesia just could not stop the offensive attack of their opponents. The Royals would fall in their opening game 107-73. Sophomore guard Deondre Phillips led EC with 27 points, as Senior Drew Cone and Freshman Zach McGee also netted double digits.
Saturday afternoon the Royals made their way to Southwestern Christian University for the second game of the weekend. The game would be an offensive show that ended in a 108-86 loss for the Royals. The Eagles of Southwestern Christian torched the net as they shot 65% from the field in the first half.
There were some Royals highlights as well. Senior guard Drew Cone tallied 33 points and sank 6 three pointers to lead Ecclesia’s scoring. In the second half Freshman guard Nick Coble came off the bench and sparked an EC run. He electrified the fans with an explosive dunk, and followed that up with a couple three pointers as he went on a 12-3 scoring run in 2 minutes of play.
The Royals are back in action on Tuesday 10/29/2019 at 5:30 p.m. They host Barclay College in their first home action of the year at The Jones Center in Springdale, AR. Go Royals!
