Last night the Ecclesia Royals hosted Barclay College in their first home contest of the season. Having Barclay on the schedule is always nice for Head Coach Tanner Huck, as it gives him a chance to coach against his alma mater.
The game started out slow, as both teams struggled shooting early. As the half continued both teams began to score more, with Barclay taking the first half lead in part due to a six minute scoreless skid by the Royals. Going into the locker room at halftime the Royals trailed 43-32.
Ecclesia came out in a zone to start the second half and made a run to close the gap. The scoring run was ignited by Sophomore guard Deondre Phillips who exploded to the rim, finishing several tough shots off the drive. Through the first 12 minutes Phillips netted 18 second half points. With 2:45 left on the clock, the Royals had cut the lead to 85-80. Senior Guard Drew Cone hit a couple of big three pointers late in the game. However, Ecclesia would fall short, as Barclay won 104-96.
Deondre Phillips and Drew Cone finished the game with 23 points each, as Freshman Guard Nick Coble added 18 off the bench. Phillips also tallied 6 assists, and Freshman Zach McGee pulled down 12 rebounds to complete a double-double with 18 points.
Ecclesia looks to build upon this game as they continue in their season, and Coach Huck will go back to the drawing board to plan a way to beat his former team next season. The Royals are back in action on Saturday November 2, in Walnut Ridge, AR against Williams Baptist University at 2:30 p.m.
