This Thursday and Friday, the Royals travelled to Hot Springs, Arkansas for another 3-game conference series against Champion Christian College. After sweeping the first 3-game series at home, the team took care of business again, winning 2 out of 3 and outscoring CCC 35-13.
After dropping a close Game 1 in the 8th of 7 scheduled innings on a controversial call at the plate, the boys came back out to send a message in Game 2. The offense set the tone for the game, putting 4 runs on the board in the first inning thanks to RBIs from
CJ Price (2-5, 2 R, 1 RBI),
Ray Jaramillo, (2-4, 2 R, 5 RBI) and
Adrian Vivo (3-4, 2 R, 6 RBI, 1 HR).
Cole Edwards started on the bump for the Royals and completely dominated CCC's offense from start to finish. After
Jett Warner (1-3, 3 R, 1 RBI) homered in the 2nd to give the offense a 5-0 lead in the top of the 4th, the offense completely broke the game wide open. With RBIs from Jaramillo, Vivo,
KJ Merriweather (2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) and
Ethan Delgado (2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI), the Royals plated 6 more runs to go up 11-0. After another 1-2-3 inning from Edwards, the offense picked right back up in the 5th with a leadoff home run from
Gustavo Soto (2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR). Vivo also homered later in the inning to extend the lead to 16-0. Delgado would score one more run with an RBI single to end the inning with a 17-0 lead.
Eddison Marcano came in to pinch-hit in the top of the 6th inning and hit an RBI triple to get to 19 runs and cap off an impressive statement game. Edwards finished the game, throwing 7 innings with 4 hits and 2 runs allowed with 8 strikeouts.
On Friday, the teams played Game 3 while tied 1-1 in the series. What little hope Champion may have had after Game 2 was quickly extinguished when Soto and Jaramillo both drove in runs in the first inning. After getting ahead 5-0 again, CCC tried to make it interesting with a 3-run 4th inning to bring the score to 5-3. The offense answered right back in the top of the 5th with another 6-spot, their 3rd of the series. After Vivo singled in the top of the 9th to bring in one more run, the Royals would complete another dominant win by a score of 12-6.
Blaine Dunstan started on the mound, going 4 innings and giving up 3 runs on 6 hits with 2 K's.
Ryan Pindell got his second win of the year for the Royals, pitching 2 innings and allowing 0 runs with just 1 hit and a strikeout.
With 3 regular season games left, the Royals sit at 28-12 with a 19-8 record in conference play. After Wednesday's release of the NCCAA Power Ratings, the team is ranked 12th nationally and 1st in the Central Southwest Conference. The team will continue with the "All gas, no brakes" mentality into the final regular season series against Dallas Christian this Friday and Saturday looking to push past 30 wins on the year. Saturday will also be Senior Day before the first pitch, where the team will recognize and honor seniors
